Isn’t it annoying when an American calls soccer, football? It’s hard, though, if you start watching a lot of it. Everyone on TV calls it football and you get into the habit after hearing it over and over. It’s also hard to follow European soccer over here. You are forced to pick between Manchester United and Arsenal because those teams are the most televised. FoxSportsWorld covers the English & German leagues fairly well and UEFA Cup is pseudo-covered by ESPN2. They showed the first Juventus-Real Madrid game, but then not the next one. They decided to show AC Milan-Inter Milan instead. Why not both? So annoying. They’ve got nothing but time on that crappy channel. Check out their line-up sometime. You’ll be less than underwhelmed. I could (should) watch more US Soccer. More Football coverage please! (I told you it was hard.)
The New Pornographers have a new album out. They’re on Letterman June 17, and are playing the Bowery Ballroom in mid-July. Also, Neko Case has a new album (coming?) out. I just got the NP, Neko to follow soon.
I was just thinking about how much fun we had (Pictures to follow on the photo site). I took Eliza on the carousel for her first time and she screeched with delight the whole time. Coney Island is really great because it’s all about having fun instead of all about cross-merchandising. Yeah, you have to pay 25 cents for the toilet, but I’d rather pay that to keep a stupid mouse out of my face. I don’t even think I saw a Coney Island t-shirt for sale (I’m sure they must have had them there, I just didn’t see them.) There was some talk of Disney moving in a few years ago. What a shame that would be.
Have a try at balancing a 44ish billion dollar budget. Click here.
Toyota Prius! I’m getting one when they come out this fall. I saw it at the auto show a few weeks ago. This model’s much bigger, solving my main problem with the older model. I looked at the Ford Escape hybrid, but the interior was less than inspiring. It get about 40mpg, not bad for an SUV, but the Prius gets closer to 60 in the city. Most other cars there seemed to average 14-19. The Honda hybrids are either the boring Civic or the wild-looking Insight. I guess they’re covering the extremes. The Prius is a much better designed hybrid in my view. Check it out.
CalPundit has an article today discussing this London Times article on Warren Buffet. Kevin makes some interesting observations, but the two paragraphs that stuck out to me were:
“Arise shareholders,” he concluded, raising both palms skyward. Famed for his integrity and modest lifestyle, Mr Buffett paid himself $100,000 (£62,000) in salary and a further $300,000 in bonuses last year. He still lives in the grey stucco house he bought in 1956 for $31,500.
Berkshire Hathaway, the insurance-to-candy conglomerate that he chairs, would report record operating profits of $1.7 billion in the first quarter, benefiting from the strength of the insurance sector, he said. This was double the $818 million reported for the first three months of 2001.”
He is right about shareholders rising up. We pay American CEOs obscene amounts of money for generally average-to-poor performance. Come on, all you workfare types! These CEOs are taking advantage of Corporate welfare, to the detriment of the bottom line and your stock account. $400,000 is a very reasonable salary.
So Eric recommended LaunchBar. I had looked at it once before but it didn’t really take. I just installed it again and now I totally love it. You never have to look for anything on your computer. Just hit Command-Space, start typing, and whatever you want will show up. Highly recommended.
Inspired by new-found information about my moral compass, Bill Bennett, I decided to place a bet or two on the Kentucky Derby. Hey, I can handle it, and it’s certainly not the milk money. So I ended up having $9 on Funny Cide and $4 on a Funny Cide- Empire Maker exacta. And that, my friends, pays $300. Thanks Bill!
